By Tom Herrin

In these times when people tend to be pretty sedentary, finding some kind of good activities can be a really good way to sort of kick the habit.  Being more active, whether it is mental or physical, is a great way to simply improve health with little extra effort.  For many people, getting into an active routine of some kind of physical game, or pursuit, can help people change the directions of where they are currently going.  For others, some good games can light a fire in them that may lead to better overall health.  One of those games that has been around for a long time is dominoes.  It is pretty simple, yet it can serve multiple purposes.

It May Help Improve Math Skills

Lots of people struggle with math.  For many, it is not natural at all.  When people play dominoes, they have to use math throughout the game.  As they become more proficient at playing the game, they will naturally become quicker with their math skills.  They will likely learn to process numbers with much better accuracy.  When people can practice something without realizing they are doing it, they normally have a much higher success rate.

It May Develop Strategy Skills

When people play dominoes, they will soon discover that playing well requires developing some strategy.  Like most other games, dominoes is one that is played best with some plan of how to best carry out what a person wants.  Once they begin playing, they will recognize that it is a game in which thinking what kinds of moves will serve to be in their best interest.  These skills, like so many others, can carry over into various other things in everyday life.  Another thing is that as people concentrate on the game, endorphins increase, and stress may be reduced.

It Can Build Social Skills

Believe it or not, most of us can use better social skills.  Particularly with the amount of electronic devices we use on a daily basis, we often tend to isolate ourselves.  Many of us become almost socially engaged in interacting with those devices and the faceless individuals they become.  Playing a game such as dominoes can provide a great opportunity for us to carry on conversation as we sit around a table, or some kind of playing surface.  Developing those skills can help to improve mental health in many cases.  It certainly can become a vital part of our overall health.
