Broadening Language Ability May Boost the Brain

By Tom Herrin

For the most part, many people today simply do not use their brains to the fullest.  With so many things that can help to do mental tasks, they often rely on them and fail to actually test the limits of their own abilities.  For an easy assessment of this, anyone can try to think back on how much the use of some kind of calculator to figure simple math.  Some are totally reliant on it.  It has become so second-nature to many that they cannot set up a math problem at all.  Without some kind of intervention, people may well lose what they have and digress.  For those who have concerns about this, a proven way to improve mental skills is to learn a new language.  Not only can it sharpen the mind but it can also improve job opportunities for many.

Learning Languages May Help Delay Dementia

A lot of people worry about having dementia for good reason.  Instances appear to be on the rise in this country today.  There may be a variety of reasons, but the fact remains that there is quite a bit of attention given to those who have this problem.  It is thought that some of it is caused by nutrition as well as some other things.  For those who want to do everything possible to delay it, learning a language has shown to be a way of accomplishing this.  A study has shown that those who speak more than one language may see as much as a five-year delay in onset of dementia on an average.

Learning Other Languages May Sharpen Hearing

Those who speak more than one language may experience keener hearing.  This may be due to the fact that they must constantly be tuned in as a listener when making the switch from one language to another as they must detect those particular sounds that help to distinguish the languages.  It would certainly make sense as a way of training the ear to be more discriminant.

Broadening the Perspective

Each of us can surely benefit from having a better base of knowledge.  Learning another language may help us to see a clearer picture.  As we begin to understand the structure of more languages, our minds may be truly expanded.  We may increase our overall capacity to learn.  I have begun trying to learn another language and found it rewarding.  I am pretty good right now to ask questions in another language.  The problem I have is if someone asks me something.  I am working on that.
