Fortunately for Us, the Sun Still Shines in Winter

By Tom Herrin

Many of us develop prejudices without ever being conscious they are there.  One of those that some incorporate is that the arrival of shorter days means it is time to crawl inside a hole and cover ourselves up, figuratively speaking.  We often darken our windows and stay indoors until the sun begins to shine for longer hours.  While it may seem like the logical thing to do, it is actually contrary to what most of us know.  Sunshine can be a critical component to good health.  Denying ourselves good access to it can be an unconscious way of self-destruction.

The Sun Can Lift Our Mood

Some have likely noticed that they can get a little down and depressed at certain times of the year and in certain conditions.  This is generally referred to as SAD, or seasonal affective disorder.  For some, it is a very real condition and can actually limit one's ability to function at their fullest.  Many of us get it in some form.  I can easily speak about this because I am one of those who gets it.  When I go for long periods with no sun or just gray skies, I tend to lose my ability to work as efficiently or be creative at all.  The sun can change it.  Opening the windows or going outdoors can make an almost instantaneous change.  My mood is suddenly lifted and I feel better physically.

Sunlight May Lengthen Life

Believe it or not, sunlight may be a factor in helping us to live longer.  According to one study done on women, those who received less sunlight over a 20-year period had a greater likelihood of dying earlier than those who received more.  It may seem insignificant, but there is obviously something to it.  It is important to remember that we are not talking about temperature here, as there may be some cold clear days.  The key is to get sunlight regardless of whether it is hot or cold.  Having windows to let in light can help a lot.

It Is a Cheap Supplement

For those of us who take supplements, it is easy to spend quite a bit of money on some good ones.  Sunlight is a great one with no cost at all.  The famous sunshine Vitamin D is something that can do lots of thighs such as prevent inflammation, assist bone strength, and boost our immune system.  If you don't currently make a point to get sunlight, there is no time like now to start.
