Why You Need a Regular Doctor
By Genevieve Cunningham
Most adults don't have regular doctors. In fact, most people haven't had a regular doctor since they were a child. As adults, we tend to see whatever doctor is available. We don't care if we've never met them before or not. But is this really the best approach? If you are guilty of jumping from doctor to doctor out of convenience, take a look at these reasons why you should consider getting a doctor and making them your regular healthcare provider from here on out.
They Get to Know You
If you're always jumping from doctor to doctor, then any doctor that you see will never really know you very well. While they can certainly take a look at your medical history, they won't know you on a personal level. Does this matter? A lot of times, it matters more than we know. If we see a regular doctor, then they know what seems normal for us and what does not. This can help them gather context clues and make a better diagnosis.
You Can Develop Trust
A doctor-patient relationship cannot work without trust. But it's very difficult to trust someone who you only just met. Getting a regular doctor allows you to build that trust in order to make the doctor-patient relationship as strong as possible. When you trust your doctor, you trust their advice. And following the doctor's advice is how we stay healthy. If you don't have a doctor that you trust, find a doctor and get to know them.
You Might Save Money
A doctor that knows you on a personal level is much more likely to work with you. If you randomly see a doctor and can't quite pay the entire bill, they're going to have little sympathy for your plight. But if you see the same doctor over and over again, then they'll already have faith that you're going to do your part. When the situation arises, they're more likely to work out a plan of action with you. And since life is unpredictable, this is a great asset to have in your corner.
Kids have regular doctors. Women often have regular doctors. Why do we, as adults, not keep regular doctors in our life? If you want to be proactive about your health and feel as good as possible on a regular basis, find a doctor you like and keep them in your life from here on out too.
