Don't Play Hero, Stay Home When You're Sick

By Paul Rothbart

No matter how well you take care of yourself, you're going to get sick once in a while. Colds, flu, a bad allergy attack. They all can and do happen. You will recover but it will take time. That time should be used for recovery. Many people try to tough it out and show up for work or school even when they are ill. It may also be some kind of activity they don't want to miss. As admirable as you may feel it is to show up even when you're sick, it's a bad idea for several reasons.

You Could Spread It to Others

Illnesses are often caused by germs, viruses, and other harmful microbes. By going to work or wherever else you were planning to go, you are putting everyone there at risk. Sneezing and coughing can put those microbes into the air, where they can easily be inhaled by the people around you. Germs can also spread through handshakes and other kinds of contact. You can even leave germs on surfaces or objects where they can be passed on to others who touch them. You are not doing anyone a favor by showing up sick. You are actually endangering their health. Be kind. Stay home.

You Are Risking Your Own Health

Going out into the world also exposes you to all those harmful microbes. You might feel that doesn't matter. You're already sick. But your immune system is working to fight the illness you already have. It will not be able to handle any new germs or viruses you may encounter. It is possible to get sicker. You could turn your 24-hour bug into something far more serious. Going out is not advisable when your body is not fully able to defend your health.

You Will Recover Faster at Home

When you're sick, your body needs comfort and rest. Sleep is the best thing for it. Being cozy in your own bed at home will let you get the rest you need to recover. You can also get water, comforting food, or medication anytime you need it. If you are out working or doing anything else, there's no sleep, no relaxation, and you may not be able to get what you need when you need it. Staying home is the fastest way to recover from illness.

There's no way to avoid getting sick occasionally. It's a part of life. When you do, don't try to be a hero and show up for work or school. Do the smart thing. Stay home to protect yourself and others and to recover as quickly as possible. Everyone will still be there when you're ready.
