4 Exercises to Try Next Time You Hit the Gym

By Virginia Laird

While some people map out every exercise to accomplish while at the gym, there are some who would rather try new things each visit. Still for others, trying out new machines and exercises can be intimidating. Don't let intimidation be the reason you miss out on some of the best exercises and workout machines for the body. A few things to try out next time you hit the gym should include:

  • Kettlebell swings
  • Rowing machines
  • Clean and press
  • Jumping rope

Kettlebell Swings

Kettlebell swings are one of the most basic exercises a person can do. It offers both cardio and strengthening. It is as simple as swinging a kettlebell from the floor to right out in front of the body at a 90-degree angle. It is vital to use correct form with this exercise in order to avoid serious back injury.

Rowing Machine

For those who want the benefits of rowing, but would rather skip out on the potential to drown, a rowing machine may fill the void. Rowing is an exercise that is more difficult than it may appear. It works many muscles of the body, including the glutes, arms, core and legs, and it is great cardio as well. This is a machine that is easy to love and can put the fun back into working out.

Clean and Press

The clean and press is an exercise that requires a bit more coordination than sitting at a machine. This exercise is geared for those who may be comfortable using free weights, or at least trying them. The clean and press focuses on toning the arms. To avoid injury, it is important to begin with little to no added weight. It is also highly recommended to read up on how to correctly do a clean and press or ask a fitness worker at the gym to help you get started to help decrease the chances of getting injured.

Jumping Rope

One of the most overlooked exercises is jumping rope. It is one of the most beneficial cardio exercises and offers great toning for the legs. Jumping rope can easily be done in a variety of ways, keeping the workout upbeat and fun, from changing the speed, alternating single leg jumps, high knees, etc.

Next time you hit the gym, give one of these exercises a try to keep your workout exciting and fun. You may find that you enjoy trying new things at the gym.
