Visit a Farm for Your Mental Health

By Brandi Goodman

A trip to a farm isn't just something school kids do for a field trip. Adults can fully enjoy visiting a farm, zoo, aquarium, or other animal exhibit that allows them to get up close to the many beautiful creatures of this world. In fact, a visit to a farm is quite beneficial for your mental health in more ways than one.

Animals Inspire a Mood Change

If you don't have a pet yourself, you can surround yourself with animals at a farm instead. Having a pet or being around animals is said to be major inspiration for a mood change. When you're feeling down, petting the soft fur of a dog, cat, or even goat or horse can help calm you. Caring for an animal is also beneficial. You know you have more than just yourself in this world to look after. Visiting a farm that allows you to brush, pet, and feed the animals can be a big help.

Vitamin D Does the Brain Good

You'll most likely be spending a lot of your farm visit outdoors. You'll be wandering the premises, looking at all the different animals behind their fences and within their enclosures, and getting a hefty dose of Vitamin D in the process. The sun offers Vitamin D that works to improve your brain function and keep your mental abilities intact. Spending a day outside enjoying the farm animals can help you acquire the amount you need. Just remember to wear sunscreen to help block out the harmful rays.

Animals and the Outdoors Can Reduce Anxiety

Feeling anxious? Being outdoors around animals can drastically reduce those feelings. People tend to feel more calm when they're outside compared to being cooped up indoors. Being around animals is also a great way to calm anxious feelings, reduce stress, and even lower your blood pressure. You'll leave the farm feeling far better than when you arrived. Many people going through trauma or trying to heal from addiction use animal therapy as a way to cope.

Find local farms or even animal shelters in your area where you can spend your time. It's a great way to get away from the rest of the world and focus on the animals who need love and attention to thrive. You yourself can thrive because of it and better your mental well-being.
