Vaccine Decisions Can Be Challenging
By Tom Herrin
No one around has missed out on the news that there has been a pandemic. The race to develop a vaccine has likely been one of the most aggressive efforts of its kind. There are many different groups that have been involved in the research. We have seen varying levels of success, and we are seeing some offered to individuals in a priority-based list. Once those on the top of the list have had the opportunity, vaccines will be made available to the rest of the general population. When this time arrives, in the coming months, we will be well served to have given adequate thought to making a personal choice about taking one.
They May Be Life-Saving
Without a doubt, the creation and use of vaccines have changed human history. Smallpox was known to kill many and reduce the numbers in communities of all sizes. The vaccine allowed people to live without the fear of it. As time has gone on, researchers have continued to pursue other types of vaccines. Those for various forms of flu, when successful, have been great. Vaccines for tetanus changed the nature of war. Prior to its use, many soldiers received wounds that ended up causing death from this disease. More recent vaccines have offered protection from many diseases that were once childhood threats.
They May Be Life-Threatening
Even with all of the success shown by many vaccines, some have gone the other way. As with anything, there have been bad batches. Many people have allergies to some of the materials used in production of some vaccines. Some reactions have included seizures, muscle weakness, memory loss, and more. Many of us simply fear taking something into our bodies that is so foreign.
It Is an Individual Decision
We all have to weigh the possibilities. For those who have a history of bad reactions to vaccines, they would be wise to choose carefully. In many cases, the risks associated with the vaccine is less than the risk of the disease. At least, most of us may have a chance to wait and see how it goes with those who are offered those first doses, however, in the next few months, we likely will be faced with a choice of our own. If we thoroughly consider it, we will be ahead of the game. Who knows, maybe we can just request a place toward the end of the line.
