Pick a Lifetime Sport and Get Involved

By Tom Herrin

If you are one of those who wants to get in better shape but hates the routine of regular exercise, lifetime sports may be your thing.  They are a great way to improve and maintain health without feeling like you are facing a daily grind.  Participating in a sport tends to be much more motivating for most of us.  Whether it is the competition or seeing the personal progress, it is pretty easy to get lost in the activity.  Once you find the right sport for you, you will be on your way to better health.

What Is the Right Goal for You?

It is generally suggested that we should get at least 30 minutes of moderate exercise at least five times per week.  Even if we cannot start right out at that pace, we can start slowly and build up to it.  Some start with as little as five minutes at a time but still shoot for five times per week.  It won't be long until we get to that 30 minute mark.  Simply continuing to push ourselves a little more each time may be all it takes.  If we choose the right sport, we may find ourselves really involved in a short period of time.

Do You Prefer Small Groups or Large

It is important to recognize what kind of setting is best for you.  Some people enjoy small groups or even one-on-one.  They find it quaint.  Others are better geared for large groups, often those that are more competitive.  Some of those smaller groups for sports may include golf, tennis, hiking, swimming, or some others that are similar.  If the like larger groups, they may be better suited for team sports such as basketball, soccer, softball, or any of several others.  Knowing where you fit best will play a major role in your success.

What Kinds of Goals Are You Into?

For some people, winning is the name of the game.  Participating in a sport that keeps scores and standings is what motivates many people.  Others like setting and attaining personal goals.  This may be in terms of times, number of successful events, or something similar.  No matter what you decide to do, you will likely find something that makes you tick.  When you do this, you will be able to see better health in a matter of a short period of time.
