Potatoes and Papayas: 2 Foods to Add to Your Menu

By Brandi Goodman

National Potato Month and National Papaya Month both fall to September. Now is the time to start learning about the importance of these foods and discover recipes you can utilize throughout the month and any month after. Each of these offers unique benefits to the body that make them a worthwhile menu addition.

Benefits of Potatoes

Though you shouldn't regularly be consuming potato chips and french fries, two unhealthy potato versions, the potato itself packs a lot of benefits. You can eat baked potatoes with the skin still attached to gain the many nutrients it has to offer. Antioxidants are found in potatoes that can fight off disease and boost the immune system. Darker and bright versions, such as purple potatoes and sweet potatoes, are the healthiest to eat.

One small potato also provides lots of fiber. You'll get more than 3 grams in your serving. Choose a medium size and you can even get up to 4 grams of protein. Vitamin C and potassium are also plentiful in potatoes.

Healthy Potato Recipes

Oven-roasted potatoes are some of the healthiest you can make. Simply dice up your potatoes and bake them in the oven with some garlic and other seasonings and you have a savory side dish. Add some meat and you have a protein-packed meal. A basic baked potato is also ideal. Top it with low-fat sour cream or sprinkle with seasonings for easy flavoring.

Benefits of Papayas

Reducing inflammation, keeping you looking young, and fighting disease are just a few of the benefits papayas can provide. Consume more of the fruit if you want to increase your fiber intake and improve your digestive system. One papaya offers 3 grams of fiber. You'll also gain Vitamin C, Vitamin A, folate, and potassium.

Healthy Papaya Recipes

You can eat papaya plain if you wish or add it to your unique recipes. A smoothie offers a great way to enjoy the fruit. Try a turmeric papaya smoothie for a real health boost. A papaya mango smoothie is also a tasty tropical treat.

Both potatoes and papayas make worthy menu additions due to their abundance of nutrients and vitamins provided. Enjoy each of them in healthy recipes or alone for a boost to your immune system. You can continue to enjoy them anytime they're available and you're in the mood for them.
