Care and Prepare in September

By Brandi Goodman

September sees a slew of health observances. Two very important ones come to mind. Self-care and preparedness are on the calendar this month to ensure people are staying ready for anything and remain as stress-free as possible in the process.

National Self-Care Awareness Month

Self-care is necessary for your well-being. You won't be able to relieve yourself of stress and tension if you aren't taking care of your mind and body. Be sure to find options that work well for you -- not every possibility works for every person. Although music, movies, and similar options may suffice in many situations to help you relax and unwind, you need to find more mobile methods that can work wherever you are and in any situation. Having a journal is a great choice. You can always write down positives of your day that can help keep you going. Even if you're in an emergency situation, this can help to calm your nerves some.

Deep breathing techniques are also vital. This will help you to relax and ease tension so you can achieve better focus. You won't be able to think clearly in an emergency if you're tense, overwhelmed and frantic. Reading is a great option as well that you can do anywhere, so be sure to keep a book with you at all times.

National Preparedness Month

Preparedness month encourages you to stay prepared for anything. Although this typically means getting a to-go back ready and having essentials set to go should an emergency ever arise, you also need to focus on healthy options that will truly get you through troubling times. You can't just throw some cans of meat into a bag and call it good. You need to find nutritious and sustainable foods that will really keep your brain and body functioning well on the go. You should also have extra medications packed if you take any and have water jugs available so you have clean drinking water to use for at least a few days -- if not longer.

The situations we face play a major role on our stress levels. We need to do what we can to be prepared and have self-care methods at the ready no matter where we're located or why. September is a great time to learn about these observances and start getting preparations in order -- but they should continue to be followed no matter the month. Self-care and preparedness are always necessary during any and all months and seasons.
