Ever Heard of a Yuzu? They're Good for You

By Paul Rothbart

Fruit is one of the healthiest foods you can eat and any balanced diet will include plenty of it. There are many varieties to choose from, each with its own flavor, texture, and nutritional value. Some of the best fruits come from outside the U.S. such as kiwi, mangos, and tomatoes (technically a fruit) which originated in South America. Asia has many excellent fruits, one of which is yuzu. Native to Japan, yuzu is a citrus that resembles a small grapefruit. A staple in Japanese cuisine, the flesh of yuzu is not usually consumed. The skin is grated for a zest garnish but it's the juice that is most commonly cooked with. It can be used in both sweet and savory dishes as well as in vinegar and some cocktails. Yuzu juice is also very healthy,

Nutritional Content

Yuzu is loaded with a good amount of essential nutrients as well as dietary fiber. It contains Vitamins A, B1, C, and E. Important minerals such as zinc, magnesium, iron, potassium, and calcium are also found in yuzu. As if that were not enough, yuzu is also rich in antioxidants, powerful plant compounds that are vital to good health. A little yuzu juice is almost like taking a multivitamin.

It's Good for Your Skin

Vitamin A boosts skin health by increasing cell turnover which helps the skin function better and develop a thick smooth dermis. This can help prevent wrinkles and blemishes, giving the skin a smooth, glowing appearance. Vitamin C is important for fighting infections that can damage skin, ruining its appearance and health. Vitamin E also helps the skin stay smooth and works with Vitamin C to fight infection. All of these nutrients are in yuzu.

It Helps Your Immune System

Yuzu contains Vitamin C and other antioxidants. The compounds can fight molecules called free radicals that can enter the body through ingested or inhaled chemicals. They attack cells and cause oxidative stress that can lead to cancer and other chronic diseases. The antioxidants in yuzu can help prevent these diseases and give your immune system a boost. Vitamin C has been shown to prevent respiratory illnesses as well. Your immune system has a huge job and can use all the help it can get.

Any good dietitian or nutritionist will recommend eating plenty of fruit. There is enough variety that you can boost your health and never get bored. Trying the fruits of other nations can be fun. Think about one of Japan's favorites, yuzu. The citrusy taste of its juice can add flavor to your dishes while providing nutrition and health benefits.
