Should You See a Counselor?

By Randi Morse

At some point in time we've all struggled. Everyone has a story and there are times when we need people to help guide us through our story; that is where a counselor comes into play. A counselor is different than a therapist. While they both help people, counselors tend to act more as a guide and often have different specialities. How do you know when you should see a counselor?

Confused About Life

There have been a number of times in my life when I've been confused. I've been confused about what to do, if I should take this job offer or that one, if I should stick it out with my husband or choose to end it. We all wind up at these important forks in the road and it can be hard to make a decision because we're worried that we'll make the wrong one. A counselor can help you with those decisions. A counselor won't tell you what to do but they will help you figure out what you truly want and what the best choice for your life is.

Job Coaching

Do you want to get ahead in your career but are having a difficult time with it? There are counselors who specialize in helping people move ahead in their chosen career field. They can also help guide you to choose a career field.

Marriage Problems

Marriage counselors sometimes get a bad rap, mainly because most of the time couples only go to them once they're on the verge of separating. There are some couples who see a marriage counselor regularly as a way to keep their marriage healthy. Marriage counselors have a lot of tools they can use to help couples learn to communicate, and good communication is the key to a good marriage.

General Counseling

There are times when we feel that our mental health isn't at its best. When this happens a counselor might be able to help. Therapists can work with people who have general mental health issues but they tend to be more of a long-term solution. Sometimes we don't need a long-term fix, just a short-term one to help shake us out of the funk that we're in. That is something that counselors are trained to help with.

Should you see a counselor? As a good rule of thumb, if you feel you should check one out, book an appointment. You have nothing to lose by making an appointment and having one or two sessions; you may find that you have a lot to gain.
