Quick and Easy Stress Relievers

By Randi Morse

When I think back on my younger self I want to laugh. I thought life was so difficult back then, everything stressed me out far more than it should. Now, at the age of 40, I realize that most of the things I stressed about were not that big of a deal. We all have stress about different things, and the things that seem to stress us out seem to change as we get older. But stress is bad for the body, which is why it's important to learn how to keep it under control. Here are a few quick ways to lower your stress level fast.

Getting a Hug

Whenever I was stressed my husband would offer me a hug, and I'd almost always refuse. I've learned now that hugging is a fantastic way to lower stress levels. When you hug someone, oxytocin is released into your body. Oxytocin is known as the "cuddle hormone." It helps lower your stress and make you happy. It can also help reduce your blood pressure level. Getting a hug is a quick and easy way to lower your stress.

Aromatherapy

A lot of research has shown that aromatherapy is a great way to reduce stress levels. While you can use things like diffusers and candles, the truth is that a lot of different types of aromas can help lower your stress level and calm you down. The smell of coffee, for example, can help ease even the most stressed of souls. Everyone has a particular smell that does it, for me that smell is warm, buttery toast!

Breathing

How often do you take a deep breath? It's important to learn how to breathe right. Breathe in through your nose to the count of three, then hold your breath for one second and breathe out again. Then repeat. When you do this you're focusing your mind on your breathing, which helps to soothe it.

Artwork

Doing some art is a fantastic way to help lower your stress level. If you're at work and have 30 minutes to yourself, whip out a pad and pencil and start drawing. Even if you're not the best artist in the world, the simple act of making art can calm the body and lower stress levels immensely.

Above all else, find what works for you. Find the healthy outlets and exercises you can do to help lower your stress level and never feel bad about doing them.
