Don't Slouch, Stand Tall
By Stephen R. Farris
We all do it. You're at the office sitting in your chair in front of the computer. The day has been a little more than stressful, shall we say. Boredom may set in, so we slouch to the side or slump forward in the chair while still trying to type out that last report for the boss. Before you know it, you're doing this on a regular basis.
So what? Well, it might eventually cost you time away from your job or physical activity due to the development of back pain from using poor posture. This will not make the boss happy as they'll have to find someone to take on your workload, or worse, they end up doing it themselves.
You can certainly avoid this and keep (for the most part) in good graces with the boss by making sure you're using correct posture while performing your duties.
Good Posture is Important
Good posture helps our bodies in more ways than we can imagine. It helps with standing, walking and sitting, putting the least strain on supporting muscles and ligaments. It also helps our bones and joints aligned and the prevention of muscle strain.
How Does One Practice Good Posture?
It's really simple if you think about it. When sitting, keep your feet placed on the floor or use a small stool to put them on if you can't touch the floor. Don't cross your legs, and make adjustments to your chair for the middle of your back. These are just a few tips, but there are many more to follow.
Stand Up Straight
Yes, standing up straight is practicing good posture. Remember back in physical education class in school. Your gym teacher would tell you to stand straight, shoulders back, chest out, stomach in, eyes straight. Ring a bell? Turns out, they knew a few things about good posture. Shifting from standing to lying down, good posture is needed for a restful night's sleep. Avoid sleeping on your stomach and try sleeping on your side or back. This can often help ease any back pain you might have too.
There's a lot more to learn in maintaining a good posture. Visiting and talking with your local chiropractor at The Joint Chiropractic is a great way to start. They might have some suggestions that you may not have heard about and can help you get started to a healthier, straighter you.
