Want to Improve Your Health? There's an App for That

By Paul Rothbart

Today's world is more health-conscious than ever. That's a good thing. Better health means a longer, happier, and more productive life. We also live in a society that is dependent on technology. The past several decades have greatly changed the way we live, especially communication and the sharing of information. But that technology is not just for sharing pet photos and memes. It is quite useful in maintaining health. I have an app that allows me to message my doctors, make appointments, manage prescriptions, and view test results, all from my phone. There are many other apps that are geared toward specific aspects of health. Many are free, and most cost less than $5. Here are some of the things you can manage with the help of an app.

Nutrition

Good nutrition is one of the pillars of good health. It can be tricky to keep track of the content of all the various foods we consume on a daily basis. Technology to the rescue. There are a number of very good apps that will track the calories, protein and fat content, and overall nutrition of your meals. All you need to do is enter the foods. Many apps will also help plan a diet, whether you want to increase, decrease, or maintain your current weight. Some point out nutritional deficiencies and point out when you are consuming too much unhealthy food.

Exercise

Exercise is yet another pillar in the temple of good health. There are apps aplenty for monitoring exercise. The most basic will tell you how many steps you have taken, floors you have climbed, and the  calories you have burned for performing a particular activity for a given amount of time. Some more advanced apps can monitor pulse and respiration. Many of these required the purchase of an added device such as a smartwatch. But any can be utilized to plan an exercise routine based on desired results.

Sleep

No matter how well you eat or how much exercise you get, you will not be healthy unless you get good sleep. There are even apps to help with that aspect of health. First, there are white noise generators. I know I sleep better with a sound in the background. I used to run a fan. Now there are apps that can produce the sound of rain, waves on the beach, thunderstorms, and many other sounds, both natural and manmade that may help you fall and stay asleep. Like with exercise, smartwatches and other hardware can monitor sleep in detail. Another advantage to using apps is that instead of hitting a snooze button, you can set more than one alarm. An extra 30 minutes of uninterrupted sleep is better than 10-minute segments.

Staying healthy is an important and very worthwhile goal. It can be challenging, but technology has provided apps that can make it easier to manage. Do a search and find the ones that suit you best.
