Overcoming Obstacles to Exercise

By Madhusudhan Tammisetti

By doing regular exercise, you may reap benefits from improving sleep, mood, energy, and health to reducing stress, anxiety, depression. Despite putting best efforts, many people fail to start an exercise routine or follow through with it.

Despite having access to free online exercise plans and knowing how and why exercise benefits, many people fail to make regular exercise a habit.

It needs a smart approach with the right mindset. Poor health or a busy schedule may make exercising more challenging, but the biggest barrier is the mental roadblock that stops you from exercising. Maybe it's due to lack of motivation or self-confidence, or getting discouraged easily to give up from taking positive steps.

Whatever is your fitness level or age, even if you've never exercised, you can take simple steps to make exercise less painful and intimidating.

Developing a Right Mindset

You don't have to be in a gym exercising for hours or force yourself into painful activities to get the physical and mental benefits of exercise. If you add modest amounts of physical activity or exercise to your weekly routine, it may positively impact your mental and physical health.

Research shows being kind to yourself may give positive results in your endeavor. So, don't push yourself by doing intense exercises for long hours that may eventually break you down. Instead, learn from your past mistakes and avoid making unhealthy choices that may harm you.

Learn to keep your expectations in check. You didn't get unfit overnight, and you're not going to get in shape in an instant either. Having too many expectations too soon may lead to frustration. Also, don't get dejected by what you can't achieve or how hard you've to work out to get to your fitness goals. Don't get obsessed over results; instead, focus on consistency.

How Much Exercise You've to Do

One important factor to remember when starting an exercise routine is that doing something is better than doing nothing. Instead of sitting on the couch, you can go for a quick walk. Research indicates adults need a minimum of 150 minutes of physical exercise per week. So, a 30-minute workout five times per week may do a lot more good to your health than sitting idle at home. If you can't find enough time to exercise for 30 minutes, you can break it down into two 15-minute exercise routines or three 10-minute workouts.

There's a reason why New Year's resolutions to get fit fail. People don't make exercise a habit or follow through with it till the end of the program. You don't need to begin with lifting weights or do intense exercises. You can start with simple exercises and build momentum as you go, and slowly exercise becomes a habit.
