How to Reach Out to Help Others and Thrive

By Sandy Schroeder

As our world spins ahead, it is easy to lose track of our people connections. Running faster to get everything done simply does not allow a lot of free time to help others.

As you try to keep up with your family's needs and your work demands, every day seems to be filled to the brim. However, making the time to help others may make it run better in the long run. The rewards are often amazing.

I have started setting aside Saturdays to help someone who is in need. Sometimes I work at the library. Other times I head to my local animal shelter. At first it seemed like a huge effort to give up my Saturday sleep-in to get out and get going, but now I look forward to this weekly connection. The people and the animals are so appreciative and the satisfaction is so immediate, it's definitely worth the effort.

If you are looking for an emotional boost for you or your family, you may be very pleased with your efforts to help others. Kids love to go to the animal or marine shelters to help, and the library often has special exhibits to explore.

More Ways to Help

Look around. There are a lot of people out there who need help.

Neighbors who are shut-ins - A plate of cookies and some time for conversation can make a huge difference in a senior's day. When mobility becomes an issue, and one day blends into the next for seniors, visitors can be a blessing to keep their spirits up.

Park or shore cleanups - Kids can really see the results when they help to clean up their favorite park or shore area. Show up for the next cleanup and be ready to make a difference.

Children's hospital wards - Bring someone along who can play a harmonica or guitar and spend a little time singing with sick children who really need a boost. Physicians often report big improvements when kids are treated to music or visits from pets.

Senior center visits - Music and song, along with plates of cookies, also work well in senior centers. Many have pianos available. Bring someone who plays and spend a little time singing holiday songs.

What Happens Next

Once you have established some regular ways to give back to those around you more things may happen. You may feel more relaxed, less worried and better satisfied with life. Researchers say people who make time to help others often lower their own levels of anxiety and depression and experience more energy and better sleep. What goes around really does come around, and it is all good.
