How to Keep Your Kids Eating Healthy

By Genevieve Cunningham

Kids are a ton of fun, but they're also really difficult sometimes. They don't like to listen. They don't like to sleep. And eating healthy food? Forget about it. While many parents have probably thought this exact thought before, it might be easier than you think to get your kids to eat a healthy diet. And of course, it's very important. If you would like to help your kids maintain a healthy diet through childhood and beyond, take a look at these tips for getting them moving in a healthy direction.

Just Keep Offering

Some of the battle in getting kids to eat healthy is to offer the right foods. If you're only offering chicken nuggets and french fries, then that's what they're going to eat. And chances are good that the first time you offer spinach or asparagus, they're not going to want it. But don't let that discourage you. Offer it again and again. It takes kids a few exposures before they're willing to give it a try. The more you offer, the more likely they are to try it, and the higher likelihood of them enjoying the healthier diet and making it stick.

Buy Less Junk

Sometimes as adults we forget that we're actually in control. And when it comes to food we definitely have almost all of the power. We buy the groceries. We make the menu. We do the preparation. If you want your child to eat healthier, then don't buy the junk. Don't leave chips in the cabinet. Don't buy donuts for breakfast. If the only thing available is healthy food, then that's what your children will have to eat by default.

Get Them Involved

If your kids adamantly refuse to eat healthy, then get them involved in the preparation. Let them chop vegetables or mix a recipe together. Sometimes involvement equals ownership, and it can make them more eager to try their own creation. Getting them involved also gives you some nice quality time to spend with your children while teaching them healthy habits at the same time.

Kids can definitely be a challenge. But if you're willing to put in a little time, then you can teach them healthy habits. Use these tips to help them eat a healthier menu, and you may be setting them up for better health and a healthier lifestyle for the rest of their lives.
