Rethinking Diet: Start With These Simple Basics
By Genevieve Cunningham
Dieting is hard. Whether you're trying to follow a very specific diet or you're just trying to revamp your current menu, the process of eating better can be daunting. We're bombarded with information and questions, and it's hard to know what to do! Luckily, rethinking your diet just got a lot easier. Why? Because you can start with the most basic concepts and build from there. If you're considering changing your diet, take a look at these tips to get you moving in the right direction now.
You Really Need Water
Water is the easiest and most important change you can make in your diet. For the most part, people don't drink enough water. We think we do -- but we don't even get close. Instead, we choose coffee, tea, soda, and other flavored goods. But water is the only thing that can actually keep your body hydrated properly. Water fuels your body. It keeps it clean. It keeps it moving. If you want something simple and affordable, just make the move toward more water, and you're well on your way to a better diet.
You Should Skip Extra Sugar
We eat a lot of sugar -- a lot more than we realize. While we're well aware of how much we add to things (think coffee, tea, etc.), we often forget that sugar is already added into many of the foods that we eat. Bread, pasta, and microwave dinners all contain massive amounts of extra sugar. If you want to cut back, it may be easier to cut back on the obvious sugars first. Stop adding so much to your coffee. Skip the scoop in your tea. Do whatever you can to cut back where you can, and your diet will definitely begin to slowly improve.
Stop Overeating
Easier said than done, right? But ending the habit of overeating doesn't have to be a long and complicated process. Start by skipping all second helpings. Chances are really good that you don't actually need the second helping anyway -- you just want it. If you still feel hungry, try drinking a glass of water and waiting. Once you've eliminated second helpings, move on to skipping the late night snack. This is a habit that you'll have to create over time, but in the end, the boost in health will be well worth your efforts.
Changing and maintaining a good diet can be frustrating. It can be overwhelming and daunting. But if you really want success, you can make it a lot easier on yourself. Use these basic ideas to get your diet moving in the right direction, and you'll be enjoying better health in your life before you know it.
