Easy Tips to Reduce Stress Eating

By Donna Stark

The past several months have been quite the challenge, haven't they? With work, school, and extracurricular activities being disrupted, and with everyone in the family being home and on top of each other, it's easy to understand why stress and anxiety levels have risen. Do you know what also increases alongside our stress levels? Our desire to eat. We like to munch, crunch, and snack our way out of misery, don't we? Unfortunately, we are nearly a year into this challenging time, and our bodies won't be able to take much more of that. If you have thrown your healthy-eating habits out of the kitchen window, it's time to bring them back indoors! Here are some simple steps to follow that will get you and your family back on track.

Schedule Snacks and Meals

If your family members are eating out of boredom or eating to relieve stress, a schedule may be something that could help. By letting your family know when the kitchen is "open for business," you can reduce a lot of the mindless snacking. It may even help your loved ones manage their time better in other areas of their life, too!

Plan a Menu

You do it when your child needs school supplies and you may even do it before you shop for new clothes. You plan. You figure out what you need and how you can get the most with your dollars. Well, it's important to do the same thing with your grocery shopping too. Before you hit the store, check your pantry and refrigerator first. Can you finish using some of the items you already have? Can you skip buying yet another can of beans? Doing this will keep you from buying what you don't need and will help ensure that what you bring home will be used.

Focus on Nutrition

If it's not in your home, it won't be eaten. It's as simple as that. So, skip the soda, chip, and cookie aisles and buy some healthier options, such as fruit, raw vegetables, and yogurt. You want as much nutrition as you can get, so load up on the good stuff and leave the processed food back at the store.

Improved Diets for Improved Health (and a Better Year!)

You may not be able to control all of the craziness going on in your life at the moment, but you can control what your family is eating. So make better choices and improve the overall health of everyone in the process!
