Change Your Fate with Food
By Donna Stark
Healthy eating is not a new concept, in fact, I’m pretty sure you were brought into this world being fed the best nutrition possible. That’s because collectively, we are all so careful with our young babies. We make sure to feed them wholesome food made purely from veggies and fruit that have been pureed to oblivion. We offer our little ones fortified milk and everything organic. We would never think to throw some barbeque potato chips into their pureed carrots or to give them some soda in place of formula. We want the best for them and are mindful of their nutrition because we want them to grow strong and healthy.
Perhaps somewhere along the way you have lost those healthy eating habits but would like to get them back. Sure, it may seem daunting, it may even seem to hard to start, but the biggest challenge with changing your diet is whether you can change your perspective, and that is a lot easier to do than you think.
Change What’s on Your Plate
Healthy eating is not about strict limitations, depriving yourself of foods you love, or even achieving a size 0 status. Rather, it’s about improving your health, energizing your body naturally, and feeling great. Here are some tips on how you can turn your diet around for improved overall health and wellness.
- Eat more fresh fruits and vegetables - Fill at least half of your plate with colorful fruits and vegetables. Choose dark green, red, and orange vegetables such as spinach, kale, tomatoes, peppers, and sweet potatoes. Choose fruit for dessert instead of cakes, cookies, or brownies.
- Switch to whole grains - When I made the switch from white rice to brown I thought I would hate it, but much to my surprise, I could barely tell the difference. The same was true for bread. So give it a try and if you think it will be a difficult change, then approach it with baby steps.
- Choose fish and lean proteins - Good sources of protein can be found in turkey, chicken, beef, fish, eggs, nuts, and beans. Fish is also a great addition to your diet because it contains minerals and omega-3 fatty acids.
- Drink water - Put down those sugary drinks and cut those empty calories out of your diet by drinking water. Keep a water bottle beside you throughout your day so it is the first thing you reach for. And if you want some flavor and variety, then try adding a slice of lemon, lime, or watermelon to your glass.
Eating Right for Better Health
We all know that eating right will help maintain our overall health and wellness and can reduce the risk of certain health problems. It’s the foundation for good health. It’s the first thing that we teach our children. And if it’s important enough to start that early, imagine how important it is to continue those healthy habits throughout our lives.
