New Year, New Workspace
By Donna Stark
If you are trying to create a "new" you this year, you can probably count on having several new things in your life. Things like a new diet, a new exercise program, new clothes (if you find success with the diet and exercise), and maybe even a new outlook, but let's not forget all of the other new things that can make a huge impact on your journey to better health and wellness as well, particularly in the office! Curious as to what they might be? Keep reading!
New Year, New Purchases
You didn't hesitate to purchase a new mattress and pillow set to improve your sleep and overall wellness, so why not carry that enthusiasm for good health to work with you as well? It is important to evaluate the environment where you spend your days because it is often the cause of poor posture and injuries. From typing on the keyboard all day to holding the phone between your head and shoulder to straining your neck to look at your computer monitor, your job could slowly be creating health issues that I know you will not want to deal with! So let's get started. Take a look at the following suggestions on how to create a new workspace.
- Desk chair - Your chair is going to be one of the most important investments you can make, so do your research and choose wisely! Select an adjustable chair that will be able to support your body shape. Also, make sure it provides plenty of lumbar support as well. After all, isn't that where you spend the bulk of your day and wouldn't you like something that actually encourages the correct positioning of your spine?
- Headsets - On the phone all day? If you are, a wireless headset is the way to go! In addition to giving you the freedom to use your hands, stand up, and walk around as you please, it's also the best way to reduce your risk of neck stiffness, pain in your shoulders, and headaches.
- Computer setup - Spend a few minutes sitting at your desk and take a hard look at how your computer monitor and keyboard are set up. Is the monitor at eye level? Are you reaching for your mouse or keyboard? Do you have a wrist pad to use when you type? Make sure your workstation is ergonomically correct and if it's not, take the time to fix it.
Healthier Workspace, Healthier You
If you spend extended periods of time sitting at a desk, it is critical that your workspace helps your body maintain good posture and alignment. So go ahead and splurge on some much-needed investments. Your body (and your health) will thank you for it!
