Get Your Vitamin C!

By Donna Stark

While many people only think of those one-eyed, peg-legged, and hook-handed scoundrels of the sea when the topic of Vitamin C deficiency comes up, the truth is that we can all use a little bit more of it during cold and flu season, and maybe even during other parts of the year as well.

In fact, without adequate amounts of Vitamin C in our diets, we may run the risk of feeling and looking as haggard as a pirate ourselves. Want to learn more? Here's what your local chiropractors at The Joint Chiropractic have to say on the matter.

Vitamin C Helps Your Body Function

There are a couple of reasons why your body can't go without Vitamin C. Let's start with your white blood cells. Your white blood cells are your immune system's first line of defense, and they require substantial amounts of this vitamin to function and multiply properly. In addition to that, the body requires Vitamin C so it can produce antibodies and prevent oxidative stress from inadequate sleep, poor diet, pollution, and prescription medications.

Why Is Vitamin C Important?

It's important to keep your Vitamin C levels in a healthy range because you want your body to be prepared for any illness that comes knocking at your door. Waiting to take your Vitamin C until after you start feeling like junk puts your body at an increased risk of becoming worse. Think of it this way ... you don't want to until the opposing army is invading your town to start training the citizens on how to fight, do you? So, give your body the fighting chance it deserves and make Vitamin C a priority!

Where Does Vitamin C Come From?

Unfortunately, your body does not produce Vitamin C on its own, so you need to get it from the foods you eat and from additional supplementation. Here are some suggestions on what to fill your grocery cart with.

  • Citrus fruits
  • Berries
  • Melon and pineapple
  • Kiwi
  • Potatoes
  • Brussels sprouts
  • Broccoli
  • Bell peppers
  • Tomatoes

You may also need to supplement Vitamin C, and fortunately, there are plenty of options to choose from. Just be sure to stay away from the Vitamin C powders that contain a lot of excess sugar. You don't want to fill your body with something bad while trying to fill it with something that is good for you.

Get Your Vitamin C!

Vitamin C is vital for your body's immune system, so make sure you are getting adequate amounts. By eating foods that are rich in it and supplementing the rest, your needs should be covered, and you should be able to get through the sickest of seasons unscathed!
