Say Goodbye to Your Winter Stress

By Brandi Goodman

Winter is a stressful time for many people. Several major holidays approach. The cold sets in. It gets darker earlier in the evenings. Lots of reasons exist why people feel so much more stressed in the winter than they do during summertime. With a few helpful tips in mind, you can say goodbye to your winter stress and learn how to manage a bit better during this harsh season.

Maintain Your Sleep Schedule

It can be difficult to sleep each night when you have worries on your mind and more tasks than usual to accomplish. However, adequate sleep is key to beating stress. You need to maintain a sleep schedule so your mind and body can get the rest they need to make it through the day. Without it, you'll quickly succumb to the stresses of winter and endanger your well-being.

Say 'No'

You don't have to say "yes" to every holiday party, catch-up session with friends, secret Santa, or even the many tasks your parents request your help with. Saying "no" is sometimes necessary for your own mental health. Simply tell people that you have some of your own tasks to accomplish and you just can't participate in what they're asking right now. They'll understand. You can always postpone and let them know you'll be around at another time that is more convenient to you.

Spend Time in the Sun

Any day that sees sunshine is a good day. Spend time in the sun whenever you can so you can gain the benefits the Vitamin D brings. You're more likely to sleep easier and feel better if you spend at least part of your day outside soaking up the sunshine. Take a walk. Visit your favorite park. Simply sit outside on a bench and take a break. You'll be glad you did.

Schedule Exercise Time

Getting adequate exercise is also beneficial for beating the winter blues. Many people struggle so much because they feel as though they have too much to do and no time to work out like they want. Schedule exercise time and fit it in anywhere you can to ensure your body and mind are getting the boost of endorphins they need to thrive.

Saying goodbye to winter stress isn't as easy as doing just that. You'll need more than words to combat the problem. Beat winter stress by keeping these tips in mind and learning how to better cope during this cold and busy season.
