Eating Healthy in Today's World
By Stephen R. Farris
Eating healthy should be a priority for everyone regardless of what age you are. Unfortunately, we live in a fast-paced world that has put more emphasis on eating out and buying meals to take home from drive-thru restaurants.
If you do this every day, then you're putting your health at more risk simply because the food you're eating is higher in calorie content. Even though restaurants -- but not all -- have started adding calorie numbers next to menu items, it really doesn't stop us from ordering what we want. And if not kept in check, we may end up eating more calories in one setting than what we should be for the entire day.
In defense of restaurants, they are trying to offer more healthy selections but still have a ways to go.
But if you truly want to eat healthier, try cooking more meals at home using fresh foods (green leafy vegetables and fresh fruits) and leaner cuts of meats.
Breakfast Anyone?
Starting each day with a healthy breakfast will help provide you with energy and lessen those sluggish feelings. There are plenty of things you can eat for a healthy morning start, such as eggs, lean bacon, fiber-rich cereals, and fresh fruit.
Omega-3 Fatty Acids
You don't have to go fishing everyday to get your fish. Nearly every supermarket you visit has a fresh seafood section in their stores. That's where you can find both fresh and frozen seafood, such as fish that contain omega-3 fatty acids, that can reduce your chance of developing heart disease, chronic inflammation, and give you better mental clarity. Fatty fish such as salmon and mackerel are easy to prepare and can be cooked different ways to suit your taste.
Supplements
So maybe you're not able to cook at home each day. You still need vitamins, minerals, fiber, and other nutrients in your diet. You might try supplements as a substitute, but not as your only source.
