Exercise Tips for Beginners

By Rachel Shouse

Starting a new exercise routine can feel like a daunting task to someone who doesn't have a consistent regime. Although it's great that you're looking into starting a routine, there are important steps that you should take to make sure this goes well for you. Learning why exercise is important, setting goals, and making it a habit are things that every beginner should be thinking about.

Why Exercise Is Important

Exercise provides more benefits than most think. Yes, working out can help you lose weight. This is why a lot of people decide to create this habit, but beyond that, you can greatly reduce the risk of a number of diseases. Getting regular exercise also helps maintain a healthy muscle mass which helps you burn more calories. Muscle burns more calories than fat, so making weight training a part of your routine is beneficial to those looking to lose weight.

Not only does a workout routine provide the benefits above, but it also provides mental health benefits. Getting good exercise can help release a lot of tension that you may be holding. It provides time to burn off steam and get out of the house which helps those with mental health conditions.

The Importance of Setting Goals

Everyone has been asked at one point or another what their five-year goals are. Really, there's an unlimited amount of time frames that you've been asked about for sure. This may feel annoying at times, but setting goals will help you grow. Goals don't have to be some huge thing. You can start off small with weekly or monthly goals. Even if it's just working out a small number of days per week.

One thing to avoid when setting goals is rewarding yourself with unhealthy habits. If you do all of your workouts in a certain week eating extra calories isn't a healthy reward. It's like a smoker rewarding themselves with a cigarette after quitting. It leads to further unhealthy habits. Make sure you reward yourself in healthy ways.

Making Exercise a Habit

It takes time to form habits. Not just time, but also patience. Patience with yourself mainly. You may not hit every goal or you might break your routine, but the best thing you can do is try again. You may have a rough day or week and you need to give yourself grace.

While you're giving yourself grace remember that getting back at it will only help. The longer you avoid your routine, the worse the consequences will be. If you form a great workout routine and gain some great muscle, the lack of use will reduce your muscle. All the work and effort that you put into gaining that muscle is gone. Just remember to do your best and pick yourself back up when you can.

Remember to make exercise something that works for you. If you struggle to feel motivated, make it fun. Find an exercise that you enjoy or workout in a place that you like. If you prefer the outdoors over the gym, get outside. Do whatever you need to do to make it work for you.
