Can A Hidden Talent Provide Relaxation?
By Tom Herrin
Many people seem to have written themselves off as to having any abilities that are untapped. It could be partially blamed on the seemingly endless stream of electronic devices that are in use today. Whether it is in the workplace or at home, people appear to saturate themselves in such media. It certainly has some good uses, but too often people seem to fall short when it comes to using their hands to create. Many of those of us who are older may remember grandparents spending much of their resting time in pursuit of something they could create with their hands. It may have served many more purposes than we realized at the time.
It Can Block Out Distractions
When people are busily engaged in working with their hands, they are able to turn off the receivers in the brain that allow it to take in constant information. People are constantly processing thoughts and environmental stimuli. They are often so busy that it becomes difficult to turn off their minds. This creates stress and tension. Working with the hands can require a different kind of concentration in which focus on the task can become somewhat intense but rewarding.
It Can Bring Considerable Joy
People tend to spend too much time in activities that are related to work. As a result, there is left little time for simple pleasures. People need to find enjoyment in some activity in their lives or they risk problems with depression and frustration. Working with their hands can help people to see the rewards of their labors. There can be a great feeling of satisfaction once they are able to see it or hold a finished product in their hands. Creating can provide a sense of accomplishment and serve as motivation for additional effort. An even greater enjoyment can be achieved once someone’s creative work is recognized by other people.
You May Have Untapped Talents
If you have never really tried to work with your hands, you may be shorting yourself. You may have an aptitude that you are totally unaware of. Working with your hands can allow you to find a creative ability within yourself. Whether it is painting, woodworking, pottery making, restoring things, or any of many other choices, there are plenty of things out there. You will never know until you try one. All it takes is a start.
