Do More Than Win People Over With a Smile

By Tom Herrin

There are plenty of benefits to smiling.  The first things that come to mind may be a friendly smile on someone when you first walk into some place.  They don’t have to be used car salesmen.  What child isn’t taken with a teacher who offers a smile on their first meeting?  The other side of that coin is how many people want to return to do business at some business where they are met with a frown and never offered any kind of smile at all?  The comparisons are pretty easy to make.  A smile can go a long way.

A Smile Can Do Wonders for Health

Smiling cause the body to relax.  This can help it to react to disease causing invaders, thus boosting the immune system.  It can make the cells of our bodies resistant to mutations that may result in things such as some cancers  It can slow the heart rate, easing the work of it.  It can also reduce stress, which is such a common problem in the lives of so many.  Smiling can help to release endorphins that can kill pain.

A Smile Can Add to a Productive Environment

People who smile are thought to be more creative.  In many jobs, creativity can help with problem solving that is so important to success.  Exploring different kinds of solutions can help improve efficiency.  Those who smile, and express joy, seem to be more productive as they are able to replace the drudgery of the job with a brighter outlook.  People who smile more are believed to receive more opportunities for advancement.  One study even indicated that those who smile may increase their longevity by as many as seven years, or about 10 percent of your lifespan.

A Smile Can Increase Your Appeal to Others

No one should have to tell us that smiles make us look better.  When we smile, half of the time others smile back.  It is an effective means of communication.  It can show empathy when others are struggling with something.  It can improve our mood.  Others see those who smile as more trustworthy.  Many see those who smile as more approachable.  Men are more likely to approach women who smile than they are those who do nothing more than make eye contact.  It can win people over for sure, but it can do much more.
