Expressing Affection Physically May Improve Health

By Tom Herrin

It is pretty easy to go through life believing that loved ones know and understand their place in the lives of parents or others.  Most people assume things when they may not actually do something to reinforce the ideas and principles. It may be understood that parents love their children simply because they are who they are.  While this may seem logical, it is an assumption that is made without foundation. Parents or other family members need to express their love and concern for their children, or whoever, a little more physically if they want to feel certain the message is sent.  Hugs are something that cannot really be made up at a later time.

They Can Relieve Stress

Everyone deals with some kind of stress.  It is just that they all handle it differently.  Many times, people forget that children deal with many stresses on a daily basis that are a big deal to them.  A regular hug can help to relieve stress and make a child feel more comforted. Their fears may seem to go away as they feel the security provided by that hug.

They Can Lower Blood Pressure

Certain hormones are released by hugging that can help blood pressure to be controlled more naturally; many people, when hugged, have likely felt that but didn't realize what was happening. It can be an important part of managing health that has no cost and can build better feelings and health for all involved.  It doesn’t even take any special skills or training. A little practice can make a lot of people happier and possibly strengthen families.

People Are Never Too Old for Hugs

The part of the population we all seem to forget too often is our older friends and family members.  They are sometimes the most in touch but far too neglected. Many of us may write them off as having no interest in whatever subject we are discussing.  That may not at all be the case. Older people may be the most affected by hugs and touch. I have found that sharing a bit of conversation and a hug with an older person may brighten their day and mine.  They may light up to know that someone actually cares enough to talk them. Try it, and I assure you that you may gain more from it than they will.
