There May Be More to Walking Than You Can See

By Tom Herrin

No one has to be an expert in order to get out and walk.  It is one of those things that just about everyone can do, and they can likely do it with reasonable success.  It doesn't take a rocket scientist to do it, but it may be more helpful than many realize to try to improve their technique and form.  Doing so may make a world of difference.  Walking is no different from many other activities in that some practices can cause people to have a struggle due to some of their mistakes.  A few bad habits can ruin the experience.

Arm Movement Can Have Quite an Effect on Walking

Anyone who has sat in a park and watched as people walk around a track has surely noticed that there are many styles of walking.  Not only that, but many people labor excessively as they try to walk a distance.  Some seem to almost be in pain as they perform what should be a simple activity.  What they do with their arms may be a problem for some.  It is recommended that the elbows be bent at a 90-degree angle and kept close to the body.  This can make more of a use for them rather than have them fling about as some do.  The hands should be kept relaxed and somewhat low as they move.

The Walking Stride Is Critical

How the feet strike the ground is a big deal.  Allowing the heels to contact the ground followed by the foot rolling across before pushing off with the toes.  This can help to keep impact to a minimum.  For the most part, the longer the foot is in contact with the ground, the better it is overall.  The best stride is thought to be one in which the foot and leg is behind more than in front.

Share Your Walk

If you want to get the most out of your walk, find someone to walk with.  This can help provide some companionship and take your mind off of the task.  I didn't enjoy it so much at one time, but after making some adjustments to the way I walk, I have found that I can enjoy it and do it for quite some time without becoming overly tired or sore.  I enjoy it and look forward to each time I get out and take a stroll.
