Working Shifts May Be a Challenge for Health

By Tom Herrin

If people had a choice, their best option for work would be a job with reasonable daytime hours.  Not only would this help them to be a part of society, but they would be able to take advantage of the natural effects of being active in the daytime.  A large number of people are believed to be deficient in vitamins today that have direct relationships with sunlight.  It seems that once the electric light was invented and improved for use, many enterprising individuals figured out that their companies may be able to operate around the clock using lights. While this may have been good for business, it has not been equally good for health.

Accidents May Increase While Health May Decline

Anyone who has had to work hours that are different from what most of the rest of the world works has likely had the opportunity to feel just how tired they can become.  Fatigue is just one of the effects of keeping such a schedule.  Accidents may be more common at work as well as on the commute.  It is often difficult for many to ever experience quality sleep because their circadian clock is thrown off.

Preventative Actions May Help

A few simple things may be all it takes to regain control of one's life.  Taking a walk before beginning the shift can help to develop a brief routine of exercise.  Avoiding caffeinated drinks very far into the shift may help to avoid sleeplessness.  Setting aside a period of several hours that has no connection to work is another good suggestion.  Many companies dedicate a considerable amount of time and effort in education and training for shift workers so as to help them to deal effectively with the routine.

Each of Us Has a Responsibility to Protect Our Health

When we work unusual hours, it can take some real planning to deal with it.  Setting a schedule that includes quality time for family is a must.  Too many times, the shift worker is the silent family member who everyone knows is there but never sees.  It is important to make a point of dedicating some good family time for an occasional event that includes everyone.  Working shifts can be a good thing, but take steps to keep it from robbing your health and family time.
