Prevention May Be in Sight for Those Who Choose
By Tom Herrin
No matter how much we fear or dislike thinking about the pandemic that has swept the earth, it has been a fact and changed the way most of us live and work. It has weakened many economies and torn families apart. The good news is that all of the expedited research is at the stage of paying off in the way of providing vaccines for use. The first of these has been made available to some of those in the most difficult situations. In just a few short months, most of us will have the opportunity, and challenge, to make a decision as to whether or not we will take one when offered. Gathering information now will serve us better when that time comes.
We Can Be Excited
With the overall success that has been found with the history of vaccines, there is good reason to celebrate. Beginning with the smallpox vaccine, some have been able to all but eliminate some diseases. With a virus, once it has no host, it cannot reproduce. The last known case of smallpox was more than 40 years ago. Many of the other viruses that once caused much pain and suffering can now be easily controlled by vaccines. Measles, mumps, and rubella is a classic example. Polio is another disease that has been epidemic in the past but now is much less likely to be seen.
We Can Be Cautious
Even with the best technology available, some vaccines have still been problematic. Individuals may have immune responses that do not work well with some vaccines. Some vaccines in the past were believed to give a person a case of the particular illness. Some reactions have included fever, seizures, loss of memory, problems with hearing or sight, along with a few others. Some people simply do not feel they should take in something that is a foreign substance.
We Have Freedom to Choose
In this country, most of us have the freedom to decide about things that affect us. Unless it is required by our jobs, most of us will not have to take a vaccine. Some will prefer to wait until a few others have done so first. It is a purely personal decision, and that is the way it should be. Now is the time to make a decision rather than wait. When deciding about health matters, it is best to get everything out early.
