Why You Should Focus on Getting More Sleep
By Genevieve Cunningham
Most people are lacking in at least a few areas of life. You might be a procrastinator, always lacking in time. Maybe you’re a little too lazy, lacking motivation to exercise and get fit. Everyone is lacking in something different, something specific to their lifestyle. But there are a few areas in which it seems as though everyone is suffering. One of the most common? Sleep! When was the last time you got a good night's sleep? And two in a row? Forget about it. If this is you, you’re in good company … but maybe it's time to do something about it. If you're not getting enough rest in your life, take a look at these reasons to focus your attention on good sleeping habits.
A Lack of Sleep Could Lead to Weight Gain
Many people don’t believe this about lack of sleep … until it happens to them! Sleep is important for the function of every system in the body. This includes digestion and metabolism … two important processes for losing weight. When these slow down due to inadequate rest, it’s easier to put on weight, especially around the middle. If you want to maintain a healthy weight, and especially if you want to lose, it’s imperative that adequate sleep is a part of the equation.
You Might Feel Exhausted and Sore
It's probably fairly obvious that exhaustion would accompany a lack of sleep, but many find that with the sluggishness comes a bit of soreness as well. Aches in the muscles, stiffness in the joints, and even headaches are all common ailments that show up when we're tired. Though over-the-counter pain relievers, heating pads, massages, and the like can all help, the only permanent solution is to get more sleep.
It Might Become Difficult to Pay Attention
Your attention span and general focus may take a big hit when you're not getting enough rest. You may find your mind wandering off mid-task or feel yourself losing focus during a conversation. Some people find that an increase in water intake or an afternoon caffeine pick-me-up helps, but nothing quite solves the problem like a good night's rest.
Sleep is so important in any healthy lifestyle. When you're not getting enough, it will definitely show. If your sleep is lacking, put some effort and focus into getting more. As you finally begin to catch up, you’ll likely notice your body and mind feeling better than ever before.
