4 Ways to Stop the Junk Food Binge

By Genevieve Cunningham

There's something about consuming junk food that is so satisfying. The sweet treats, salty chips, and bubbly sodas. It's all so good! Unfortunately, it's also all so bad! Junk food is among the worst things that you can put into your body. It wreaks havoc on both the body and the mind. But if you're prone to a junk food binge, then you know how hard it can be to kick this bad habit to the curb. But if you want better health, quitting the binges is also necessary. If you're ready to improve your health by giving up junk food, take a look at these tips to help you get started.

Don't Be So Restrictive

Extreme restriction usually leads to a binge. Why do we do this to ourselves? Why do we go from eating everything to eating nothing? Instead of depriving yourself, just cut back. Allow one treat per day. Allow yourself some wiggle room. This can actually lower the risk of a binge, which means less of the negative side effects while still enjoying your favorites on a regular basis.

Buy Less

You can't eat the junk food if you don't buy it. If your weakness is sweets, leave them off of your grocery list. If you tend to grab the chips, don't buy any bags this trip. You actually have control over what comes into your kitchen. Plan ahead, buy a limited amount of junk food, and don't go back for more when it's gone.

Drink More Water

Water can do two important things for our health and for our obsession with junk food. First, water helps flush out the bad toxins that we consume with our junk food. Does this mean we get a freebie if we add water? Absolutely not! It simply means that a little extra water might help in a weak spot. Drinking more water can also keep us feeling full, which means there's less room for food in our stomachs. When you get the urge to binge, drink water instead and see if the urge passes.

Focus on Sleep

Sleep is so important. When we don't get enough sleep, we're much more likely to binge. Our bodies and minds simply won't work together as well as they should. We won't have the strength to fight off cravings or resist the sweets. Before you do anything else, improve your sleep. Once your body is well rested and getting sleep on a regular basis, it will begin to work with you instead of against you, and your binges will likely decrease automatically.

Junk food is so bad for our health! We don't need it, and we should definitely reduce its presence in our lives. Use these tips to get started. With some patience and practice, you can beat the junk food binges for a healthier body and mind from here on out.
