Those Simple Foods May Be Pretty Healthy

By Tom Herrin

For those who remember their stories from the old world, one of the most basic sources of protein was almost always the same.  Even though many people ate foods such as that which came from sheep and goats, it would appear that almost all people relied on foods that came from the water.  Fish can be found mentioned frequently as a food in the Bible as well as many other literary works works and ancient records.  No doubt, one of the main reasons for this was the fact that it was available to practically everyone.  After all, people had to live near a supply of water when they did not have the luxury of plumbing.  Fish were available, and today just as then, they could do a lot to build good health.  Including it in a diet can have some good results.

It Is Full of Nutrients

Fish is well known for its supply of protein.  It is much lower in harmful fats than many of the foods that people commonly eat.  It also is a good source of iodine and several minerals and vitamins.  The fatty fish are known to contain Vitamin D, which is often deficient in a large percent of the population.  It also has omega-3, which seems to have the ability to do all kinds of things in the way of good health.

It May Be Good for the Heart

Heart problems are pretty common in many places in the world today.  Much of it seems to be due to poor eating habits and lack of exercise.  Eating fish may provide some things that can help improve the heart and possibly avoid strokes.  It has often been observed that those who eat more fish have lower instances of these issues.  A study of more than 40,000 male healthcare workers revealed that when they ate fish at least once per week, they had a 15 percent lower risk of heart disease.  This appears to be another case where omega-3 seems to be a key.

It May Help Protect Our Brains

Many people are concerned about loss of mental function as they age.  Problems with dementia and general loss of mental ability may be a legitimate concern.  Apparently eating fish can help to protect grey matter.  According to some studies, people who eat fish regularly have more grey matter.  This is good news for those of us who are getting older.  If that is what it takes to help us maintain better mental function, eating fish is easy.  I eat a can of sardines a couple of times per week.
