Don't Sabotage Your Workouts

By Donna Kostiew

You made the decision and got yourself that gym membership. You spent an entire weekend buying new workout clothes to help build your enthusiasm. You made a sincere promise to yourself that you would take this seriously and exercise every other day. And then life got busy again and you found yourself barely making it there once a week. And that was a good week.

OK, maybe it was me doing all of that and not you, but I know that I am not alone. And for those who find themselves falling into the same trap that I did … Don’t!

Don’t be like me. Don’t let life’s distractions or a boring workout routine keep you from exercising. Instead, follow these simple tips to keep the motivation flowing.

How to Not Become Bored With Your Fitness Routine

A few simple rules. What could be easier?

Eat a balanced diet – The food you eat is your fuel … you know that. So make sure that you are eating a balanced diet so that you can maximize your efforts and stay energized throughout your workouts.

Love your workouts – Choose workouts that you actually like to do. If the bike puts you to sleep, then find something else! If your routine consists of exercises that you genuinely like to do, showing up, pushing yourself, and staying for the entire time won’t be hard to accomplish. Exercise classes are great for adding some change and fun to your workouts.

Get plenty of rest – If you are exhausted from lack of sleep, any amount of effort you give during your workouts will be compromised. Fatigue is an energy-sucker, so make sure that you are getting the sleep you need and plenty of rest between those hard workout days.

Mix it up – So many people seem to plateau during their fitness program and often accept that as a time to stop, that they won’t get over that hump at all or improve anymore past that point. If this happens, chances are that all you need to do is change your routine. Mix it up! Add some new exercises, get rid of the old. Try something new or work out in a completely different way. Just don’t stop.

Work out with a friend – Exercising with a friend or a group can be very beneficial to your fitness goals. It’s easy to justify skipping a workout because we are usually very accepting of ourselves and our weaknesses. But having a friend hold you accountable is different. They aren’t going to care how warm your bed is in the morning if they had to get up to. And they may end up pushing you more than you would push yourself.

Boredom, excuses, and life’s distractions can be detrimental to any kind of fitness goal you may have. Fight them off with the tips above and reach your goals quicker than you ever would have imagined.
