Create a Strong Foundation for Your Health

By Sara Butler

Creating a strong foundation for your health and wellness is one of the best things you can do for yourself. That's because if you've got your health, then the world is your oyster. It's easier to complete tasks, feel good when you wake up in the morning and have the energy to participate in activities with friends and family. There are a few common things that, with a few small tweaks, can become a boon to your health rather than a hindrance. Here's how you can create a strong foundation for your health to get the most out of life.

Exercise

You really need to work some movement into your day most days of the week. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention suggest 150 minutes of moderate exercise each week to help you stay healthy, but if that number is overwhelming to you, then simply break it down to smaller, more manageable time slots.

Start by taking a 15-minute walk around your neighborhood before dinner every night, then bump up the time. Or join some sort of sports club or participate in an extracurricular activity that gets you up and gets you moving. You'll have more energy, improved mental health, and stronger bones and muscles as a result.

Make Vegetable a Priority

You mom didn't tell you to finish your vegetables for nothing -- your mom knew they were part of a healthy foundation. A healthy diet full of fresh fruits and vegetables can help you to feel better, prevent illness, and even assist your body to heal more effectively. Start your morning with some spinach in your scrambled eggs or kale in your morning smoothie and aim to add greens to each meal throughout the day. Your body will love the nutrients it's getting and you'll feel the effects!

Work on Your Sleep Habits

Be honest, are you getting enough sleep at night? Sleep is one of the most important things you can do for your health since it's time your body uses to relax and rejuvenate. If you don't get enough of it, you'll have trouble focusing, your stress levels will be more difficult to control, and your blood sugar can even get out of whack. Go to bed at around the same time every day and make sure your room is set up for successful sleep by keeping it dark and cool.

Creating a strong foundation for your health takes a little bit of planning and work, but it's worth it!
