How to Ease your Family into Healthier Eating

By Sara Butler

It can be tough to know where to start if you want your family to begin eating healthier. If you make big changes too fast, then you might be in for a lot of complaints! You can improve the eating habits of your family a little bit at a time by making a few small adjustments and gradually introducing healthier habits. In fact, making changes gradually can help make the changes more permanent because you’ll be more likely to stick with them. Here are a few ways you can fix your family’s diet -- with the least amount of complaints!

Go Lean

A lot of families eat fatty meats because they’re cheap, but it’s one area you can make a big impact on your family’s health. Preparing leaner cuts of meat can save you calories and unhealthy fats without sacrificing taste or texture. Think about switching from ground beef to ground turkey, or try substituting chicken instead of beef just one night per week.

Sneak in Vegetables

Adding pureed vegetables to casseroles and sauces is a great way to pack a nutritional punch into your family’s food without making a big change to the flavor. They even make a great thickening agent in sauces in place of milk or cream. Don’t be afraid to experiment by adding pureed vegetables to pasta sauce or pureed broccoli into a cheesy casserole.

Bypass the Box

If you can avoid preparing something from a box, then you should. The good news is that a lot of dishes don’t require a lot of expensive ingredients to replicate what can be found in boxed meals. Plus, the meals you prepare from scratch are healthier for your family. You don’t have to do it all the time, but understand that cutting down on processed foods with a bunch of additives is a good habit for everyone in the family.

Drink Water

Instead of juice or milk at the dinner table, give everyone a big cup of water. You can also slowly replace soda or juice in your home with water. To help ease the transition, try adding fresh fruit to water such as oranges or lemons. Sliced cucumber or mint leaves also make for a good option. Just remember, the more water your family drinks, the less they'll crave sugary drinks such as soda.

Healthy eating doesn't have to be a sudden change. if you ease your family into it, then there will be fewer complaints -- which is better for everyone involved!
