4 Toning Exercises You Can Do at Home

For many people, the thought of heading to the gym can be accompanied by a variety of reasons to procrastinate. When these times occur, it is always a good idea to have a few exercises in mind that can be done in the comfort of a person’s home, helping to remove any excuse. A few exercises that can be done without heading to the gym include:

  • Hula Hoop
  • Push-ups
  • Plank
  • Pilates single leg lift

Hula Hoop

Although you may be years past the excitement of hula hooping, it can help tone the core. Some might be surprised to know that because of the number of benefits, hula hooping is becoming increasingly popular among fitness class instructors. It is low-impact and can offer a challenge to those looking to work the core.

Push-Ups

I have never been a push-up fan; however, the benefits have me doing a double-take before brushing them off. While many would believe this exercise works only the arms, push-ups work the entire body. For those who may be like me, and dread the push-up, there are a variety of variations to help make this exercise more tolerable.

Planks

Over the past 10 years, planks have been gaining steam. These are great for the entire body, especially the core. Fitness instructors rely on the plank to tone the core more often than crunches and sit-ups. Planks can also help those who struggle with correct posture, as this exercise helps train both the back and the abs to straighten correctly.

Pilates Single Leg Lifts

Leg lifts can seem so elementary that some avoid the use of them. This is a mistake. In fact, leg lifts are great for the whole body. There are a wide variety of ways to employ this exercise making it versatile and good for more than just the leg. The Pilates single leg lift has a person sit up while performing the exercise. This requires the use of not only the leg, but the back and ab muscles as well.

Next time the thought of heading to the gym has you finding other things to do around the house, try out one of these simple exercises. You may find them easy to accomplish while watching your favorite television show, listening to the radio, or even while enjoying the backyard with your kids. Before too long, you may have the drive to get back to the gym, or realize you can meet your fitness goals at home.
