3 Reasons You Need a Workout Buddy

By Virginia Laird

There is one thing I would never trade, and that's my workout buddy. Millions across the nation report having a buddy to help them on their journey to a healthier life. Health and wellness experts advise those who struggle to stay on track with working out should include a friend or two to help them stay focused. These are the people who have a listening ear when you need it, are honest even when you want to hear the truth least, and have a fun streak. A workout buddy offers many benefits to your exercise regimen, including:

  • A workout buddy can push you
  • Working out with a buddy can be exciting
  • Accountability is a benefit of an exercise friend

A Workout Buddy Can Push You

Have you ever been to the point you were ready to throw in the towel when you hit the gym? Many, even those who love exercise, admit there are days that it sounds better to stay on the couch. These are the times a workout buddy can give the extra push needed to help you stay successful. Without the help of an exercise friend you may find laziness a little too comfortable. However, a great exercise buddy can call you out and help motivate you when you need it most. By the same token, you can be that same motivation for them in return.

Working Out with a Buddy Can be Exciting

If your exercise buddy is anything like mine, you will be laughing nonstop. Whether we are having a giggle at our own craziness or telling funny jokes, the time I spend working out with my friend passes so quickly. Begin taking your exercise from a drag to fun, exciting and full of life by having a buddy by your side. Together exercise is always more successful.

Accountability is a Benefit of an Exercise Friend

Whether you like it or not, it's important to have a workout buddy who will call you out when you're slipping. It's not mean-spirited, but it's an opportunity to help you keep the ship pointed in the right direction. Maybe you skip out on a workout, or eat something that's off limits. On your own, left to your own excuses, you may give up on the diet or start missing workouts altogether. If you want to get in shape, you need to be accountable to yourself -- and barring that, you need to be accountable to someone else who also wants the best for you and desires similar results.

Start lining up your friends for your next time you're at the gym. You are sure to have a blast, and if you see a couple of ladies who are laughing and appearing to be having far too much fun, it just may be me and my workout buddy!
