Your Chiropractic Guide to Safe Shopping

By Brandi Goodman

Shopping is done all throughout the year, but there's a major focus on the activity as the holidays approach. From purchasing fall and winter decorations, to getting everyone checked off your Christmas gift list, lots of shopping trips are in order from now through December. You may notice some pain in your back when you return home from a long shipping excursion. Your chiropractic guide to safe shopping can help you avoid this dilemma in the future.

Don't Overload Yourself

A shopping trip is often completed with a cart. You're able to put everything inside and push it through the store with ease. When you're finished, however, you're often stuck placing the bags on your arms and walking out with them.

This may not be true for a grocery store, but it is when you're shopping at a mall or store that doesn't allow you to bring the carts outside. You should make your shopping trips small so you don't have so much to carry. You don't want to overload yourself and end up in pain because of it. If you shop at a mall, go and put your bags from one store in the car before heading into another to make a new purchase.

Skip the Purse

Carrying a purse around while you shop only adds to your discomfort. You already have enough to worry about. You don't want a heavy purse or bag weighing you down as well. You really should just put your ID and money in a small wallet to stick in your pocket and leave your purse at home when you plan on shopping.

Wear Athletic Shoes

Flats and heels should never be worn shopping. You're going to be doing a lot of walking. These types of shoes offer little to no support or cushion. You need a comfortable pair of athletic shoes that help with shock absorption and keep pain from setting into your feet -- and then your legs and lower back.

Shop Online

Of course, you don't even have to step foot into a store at all. Online shopping has become incredibly common. Sit up with proper posture in bed or at the table and keep your phone at eye level. You can make the purchases from the comfort of your own home and have them delivered to your door for a much more painless time.

Your fall and winter shopping shouldn't lead to a day (or days) stuck in bed. There are ways to combat the discomfort that often comes along with a long shipping experience. Keep these chiropractic guidance tips in mind to make each trip easier to tackle.
