Habits Have a Way of Changing Everything
By Sandy Schroeder
The things that we do every single day often do the most to shape our lives. At the time, they may feel like random choices, but when they are repeated over and over they determine where we live, what we do, the strength of our health, and the overall shape of our lives. If your day-to-day choices are not the best, now would be a good time to do something about them. Here are a few ways to change things.
Turn off the TV - We all have favorite shows, but when one hour leads to six more, too much sedentary time will show up in weight, strength and health. Avoid leaving the TV on in the background and turn it on only when you are going to watch a specific program.
Get outside as much as possible - Sunshine, fresh air and greenery really can make a difference in your health and attitude. Start with a morning run or walk around the block. Continue on with outdoor breaks during the day and consider reserving an hour after work to head to the park with your kids, or just sit and collect your thoughts in the garden.
Enjoy meals with family and friends - Avoid parking in front of the TV or computer to eat meals. Shop for fresh fruits and vegetables and spend some time cooking or baking with your kids. Then sit down to supper to the food and talk with everyone around you. You will eat less and enjoy it more and your kids will benefit from the time with you.
Expand your range of activities and contacts - Think about all of your interests and reach out to meet new people online or discover new sources. Consider reviving old interests such as playing the guitar or sketching flowers in the garden. Reach out to friends and relatives to trade thoughts, ask for advice, or reminisce. One thing can lead to another and energize your day.
Pick up speed - Find ways to do more with new exercises, hobbies or classes. Get up an hour early to do some stretching on the patio or take a walk in the neighborhood. Spend some time reorganizing your office, garage and kitchen to save time and make everything flow better.
Whatever you do to improve your habits can improve your life. Enjoy.
