Keeping Your Family Fit In the Summer
By Brandi Goodman
The summer season provides lots of opportunity for fitness. The sun shines often and the warm days encourage people everywhere to get outdoors and explore their surroundings. Take advantage of this time and use it to keep your family fit this summer.
Take a Bike Ride
A family bike ride is a great way to get everyone active. Have everyone get on their bikes and ride around the neighborhood or to a nearby park or green space. You can even pack a healthy picnic and take it along for a fun adventure your kids will enjoy. Bring some toys that encourage activity as well, such as a ball to toss or Frisbee to throw. It will encourage movement for everyone and create some great bonding time.
Go for a Swim
Swimming is a common summer activity. Find a local beach or outdoor pool and have everyone go for a swim. The activity provides a full body workout that uses all the muscles in your body. You'll really be working your arms and legs in particular. Just be sure everyone stretches out well before heading into the water. Swimmer's shoulder is a common injury.
Take a Hike
A hike through the wilderness is also great exercise. Make sure you have a bag packed for the adventure. You'll all need some water bottles, sustenance, and some safety gear just in case a mishap occurs and you're stuck out there for longer than you anticipated. A first-aid kit, map, whistle, knife, and compass should be included in your pack. It's also wise to make sure every member of the family has an appropriate pair of hiking boots. Sandals should never be worn because they don't offer any grip or support.
Visit a Local Park
Many local parks are available to use. Have your kids run, jump, climb, and perform other exercises on the provided playground structures. You can join in as well as long as there are no signs indicating age limits. You may want to bring along some hand sanitizer and wipes because many playgrounds are not cleaned regularly.
Fitness is important for overall health. You need to find ways to exercise everyday. Making it a family affair can help encourage your kids to get up and stay active rather than sitting in front of the television or video games all season long. Do what you can to get your family fit this summer.
