How to Supply Your Teen With Healthy Snacks
By Stephen R. Farris
Having a teen around the house can be a challenge when it comes to making sure they're eating healthy.
Usually the first thing they want to do after getting out of school is to scavenge the kitchen for snacks. Of course, if you pick up your teen from school, they usually want you to stop at the nearest fast food chain to grab a snack and that -- as we know -- is not the healthiest of choices.
To make sure they are getting the proper nutrition they need, you may have to do a few simple adjustments to your shopping list and/or, cooking at home. Some things can be prepared ahead of time and stored so that when your teen hits the door, all they have to do is grab and go.
The Old Bento Box
It sounds a little weird, but a bento box is a container with several open compartments. These work great as you can prep several for a week's worth of snacks. Each compartment could be filled with different protein, fiber, and healthy fat snack items to give your teen a small variety. This saves you a little time during the week when you're usually trying to cook the family meal for the evening.
The internet is full of ways to prepare healthy snacks, so here's a few ideas to consider:
- Apple and almond butter overnight oats
- Chocolate no-bake energy bites
- PB&J chia seed pudding
- Vegetable, cheese, and egg muffins
These nutritious snack recipes are available on the web. You might also try preparing more protein-rich snacks such as deviled eggs, tuna and cheddar bites, chicken salad with apples, cranberries, and walnuts. You may also consider keeping a good supply of granola and protein bars in your pantry, as well as fresh fruits and nuts.
