Natural Sunburn Remedies

By Sara Butler

Summer is in full swing, which means that while it's time for those lovely outdoor activities, it's also time for some serious sun protection. But sometimes even when you take all the precautions you can, the sun slips through and burns your skin. Nature may be the cause of your burn, but Mother Nature is nice enough to also give you the remedy. Here are a few of the natural ways you can soothe that sunburn this summer.

Aloe Vera

Probably one of the most popular natural ways to soothe your skin after a sunburn, gel made from an aloe vera plant provides your skin with relief. It has anti-inflammation properties that immediately soothe your skin when you apply it. So, make sure to keep aloe vera in your medicine cabinet this summer, just in case.

White Vinegar

Do you know what is worse than a sunburn? A sunburn that's become infected. If you have a sunburn that becomes infected, you can relieve some of the inflammation and pain naturally with white vinegar.

White vinegar has a natural antiseptic in it called acetic acid. This is how it delivers pain relief and fights an infection when applied. A bonus is that it can be used to clean your home and laundry, too.

Baking Soda

Another natural sunburn relief option that you probably have right in your kitchen cabinet, baking soda is great for treating a sunburn at home. It works by helping to restore pH balance to your burned skin. Make yourself a cold compress of baking soda mixed with water and put it on your sunburn for 15 minutes.

Green Tea

Green tea is more than a tasty beverage, it's also a great natural sunburn remedy. The polyphenols in green tea are strong anti-inflammatories. To use it on your sunburn, steep some green tea and then soak a clean washcloth with it. Then, put the compress in the fridge to cool and apply it to your sunburn for 15 minutes.

Greek Yogurt

The lactic acid in Greek yogurt is a great anti-inflammatory. It can be used to soothe your sunburned skin and moisturize it. Applying Greek yogurt to your skin reduces redness and decreases the sensitivity in your skin to help usher in pain relief. Apply plain Greek yogurt and leave it on for 15 minutes, then rinse away.

You should do all you can to avoid sunburn, but if it does happen, then treat it naturally!
