Yogurt May Be the Secret Belly Fat Weapon

If you have ever struggled to get rid of belly fat, you know what a challenge it can be. You may be losing weight on a diet, but still dealing with belly fat, but researchers say yogurt may provide the solution.

University of Tennessee researchers studied obese adults who had three servings of fat-free yogurt daily as part of a weight-loss diet. They lost 22 percent more weight and 60 percent more body weight than those who did not eat yogurt. At the same time they lost 80 percent more actual fat in the stomach area.

Belly fat, which is visceral fat, surrounds organs and becomes metabolically active to increase inflammation in the body and up the risk for diabetes.  High cholesterol, high blood pressure, kidney damage, cancer, stroke and heart attack risk all go up with extra belly fat.

When you add low-fat yogurt to your daily diet you also get healthy bacteria for improved digestion and a big helping of protein. Skip the sugared versions and add your own flavors with peanut butter, dark chocolate cocoa or fresh berries.

Here are some effective ways to drop even more pounds

Aerobics work - Trim belly fat with biking, running or swimming and brisk walks. Whenever you get the heart rate up, you will be burning fat. Lift weights three times a week too to shed the visceral fat.

Do intermittent fasts - Skip ultra-processed foods, red meats and sugary drinks and use fasts to speed the process along.

Ease that stress - Most people that I know who are fighting belly fat also have stressful lives. The two situations go hand-in-hand and health is the loser. If you can relate, take steps to actually relax with meditation, deep breathing exercises, and mind-body routines such as yoga or tai chi. You will know the plan is working when stress starts to lift. Suddenly everything looks better.

Skip the brews - Limit yourself to one glass of wine or beer daily, or skip them completely. Those empty calories definitely pack on the pounds and easily become a daily habit.

Put fiber to work - Pick some tasty favorites like black bean tacos, apple snacks, coleslaw, hummus, cauliflower pizza crusts, or Brussels sprouts to reduce belly fat.

Eat out less - Shop your local farmers market and cook dinner at home to trim visceral fat quickly. Turn your favorite fruits and vegetables into family favorite recipes for dinner.

Make the effort to fight belly fat and watch for results. As you trim down, you will find fattening foods are much less tempting. As the diet experts say, "Nothing tastes as good as slim feels."
