How to Shift Gears and Surge Ahead
By Sandy Schroeder
If you feel like you are in a rut, it may be time to rethink everything and shift gears.
Mindbodygreen.com took a look at ruts recently and reminded us we can do a lot just by changing our minds. When we look at life in a different way, everything can change. Here's how to get started.
Skip the prescriptions - There is a lot advice out there with guaranteed happiness steps, but you need your own plan. Take the time to think through what's happening in your life and what it would take to turn it around. Talk with the people around you and get their impressions too. Then get specific about the actions you want to keep and the ones that need changing. Do a broad outline and gradually fill in the details as you see what works.
Review your priorities - Take a close look at the time that you spend at work, with family, and on your own with leisure time. Your priorities may have shifted and may not line up with your current schedule. Figure out where you are putting your energy and see if that matches your goals. If the times don't match, start trimming and adding here and there to gradually shift your effort to make things happen the way you want them to.
Look at your role in the marketplace - Focus on your best skills and decide how they fit in today's job market. Consider your passions, purpose and potential and then get specific to link that to your current job and future jobs you might like to have. Talk with co-workers and your boss and outside contacts to get the best overall picture.
Think about your relationships - We all make the mistake of expecting our connections to others to match perfectly with our expectations. Instead, each connection should be grounded in thoughtfulness, perception and care. Treat each person the way you want to be treated and you may be delighted by the response.
Be aware of deliberate distractions - When life gets just a bit too real, it's all too easy to skate off to a favorite site or settle in with a favorite old movie. We all need escapes, and they help us relax in small doses. Make room for a little time each day to unwind and keep the rest of your schedule focused on what you want to happen. You will be glad you did.
