Fall Foods to Start Enjoying More Often

By Brandi Swieter

Autumn sees many fruits and vegetables come into season. These fall foods are not only tasty, but also provide many important nutrients and vitamins. Enjoying these more often is a surefire way to improve health and keep sickness at bay during a fun season full of beauty and wonder.

Butternut Squash

Butternut squash is a common site to see during the fall. With Vitamin E, Vitamin C, Vitamin A, and other vital nutrients found within it, this food is a healthy choice for any menu. The fiber content makes the vegetable ideal for digestion. It is also a good source of potassium useful for energy. Butternut squash is harvested in the fall but keeps well for several months, which is why it is sometimes named the winter squash. It can be consumed from fall until winter.

Pumpkin

Pumpkin is the more popular choice for fall foods. With big and small versions sold at stores, orchards, farms, and by local sellers, there is plenty for everyone to consume come fall time. The vegetable is good for the heart. The amount of potassium within it can help to lower blood pressure and reduce levels of sodium. It also contains plenty of Vitamin C, making it useful for fighting colds and other illnesses. Pumpkin soup is a great choice for a chilly fall day. The seeds make a tasty snack any time.

Apples

Apples are bountiful in the fall. Many people head to orchards to pick their own basket full. The fruit offers antioxidants intended for fighting off illness, and even certain cancers. It also contains fiber meant for digestion. Eating an apple has always been said to keep the doctor away, and that’s due to the many vitamins and nutrients it provides.

Pears

Pears are very similar to apples. They too have Vitamin C as well as antioxidant components. Pears also contain a healthy dose of folate. This is vital for expectant mothers. With manganese, copper, and potassium found in the fruit, it’s a wonder more people don’t consume them regularly.

Sweet Potatoes

Sweet potatoes are another popular option in the fall. They are particularly found at the Thanksgiving table. Though many people opt for a dessert dish, this type of potato is just as tasty plain. Sprinkle on some cinnamon and it’s a tasty treat all on its own without the need for brown sugar and marshmallows. They contain lots of Vitamin A, Vitamin C, Vitamin B6, potassium, and fiber.

Enjoying nutritious foods throughout the entire fall season should be on everyone’s goal list. With numerous options to choose from, each packed with nutrients and vitamins, everyone can find a fruit or vegetable they like. Each option will offer health benefits that can help to keep the typical fall sickness away.
