Do Your Kids Sleep Well Enough to Be Successful?

By Tom Herrin

There have always been a lot of ties between sleep and overall physical function.  Years ago, when this was a more agricultural-based nation, people worked long hard hours.  This was taxing and required enough sleep to maintain this physical stress.  Before electric lights, it was a little easier to follow the daylight and dark patterns for sleeping.  With the onset of electricity, people were able to create more artificial environments.  Shift work is now common and many companies spend considerable resources trying to train employees in ways to keep it from becoming overly difficult due to the change of light patterns.

Sleep for the Worker

Many people are affected in dramatic ways when they fail to get enough sleep.  Lack of it can increase the number of accidents.  It can also contribute to weight gain.  Those who deal with sleeplessness may find themselves unable to be as successful in carrying out mental tasks.  Reaction time and ordering of events and activities is more difficult without enough sleep.  One of the major causes of physical, mental, and emotional problems is stress.  When people get enough sleep, their stress levels tend to be lower.  Inflammation may also be affected in positive ways with adequate sleep.

It Has Long Been Known That Students Need More Sleep

School can be more taxing than many people realize.  Children need to be rested.  Good sleep can improve memory.  It can also improve focus and attention.  This is a huge problem with many school-aged children.  Creativity can be improved with better sleep.  This is vitally important for students.  For those in athletic activities, their physical success will be greatly affected by their sleep patterns.  No one will be able to perform well when they are tired.

You Can Jockey With Things To Improve Your Sleep

About everyone is aware that caffeine can prevent you from sleeping well.  Adjusting sound and lighting can be a big factor, and it may be very different by individual.  Eating meals too late or too heavy can interfere with sleep.  You can look at the kinds of foods you eat as well.  Some can promote sleep while others may keep you awake.  Exercise may help you to relax, but if you do it too late, it may prevent you from unwinding.  Room temperature is another factor that you may want to look at.  Improving sleep habits may help your entire family to find greater success.
